Hear My Voice has been generously funded by Barnsley TUC Training Ltd and programmed and delivered by Barnsley Museums
In our first year, we worked with author Nik Perring and 8 schools across Barnsley and the Dearne Valley. The project’s aim was to write about ‘home’ and we have explored everything that that could mean – from the buildings we will live in and the people we live with, to our town and its surrounding areas – landscapes, animals, wildlife, history – everything.
We’ve designed our ideal homes, we’ve taken people on a tour of our town. We’ve been birds flying above it, swooping down to see what we can see. We have even had alien visitors exploring where we live.

Three schools took part in the second year of the Hear My Voice project – Highgate Primary Academy, The Hill Primary Academy and Oak Well Rise Primary. Year 5 pupils worked with Wakefield poet Conrad Burdekin and Sheffield poet Suzannah Evans between October 2017 and April 2018 to write poetry on the theme of nature and biodiversity at Elsecar Heritage Centre. They went on a nature walk around Elsecar’s woodland, park and reservoir to gather inspiration.
The children worked with filmmaker Wayne Sables to create three separate films about their Hear My Voice journey. These films were screened at a celebration event for the pupil’s families and friends in April 2018, following a presentation from each school.
