Thomas Palmer - Hoyland Time Capsule
The Hoyland Time Capsule was made in collaboration with children from Hoyland Springwood School and visitors to Hoyland market. The project began with clay sculpture workshops at the school and further workshops were held at the market. Thank you to everyone that braved the wind and rain to participate at the market!
During the workshops everyone was offered the broad prompt of thinking about a hobby, idea or interest that they would like to share with people in the future. Or even to solely focus on the direct experience of that moment in time manipulating the clay. After having fun with the clay, playing with texture, form and methods of joining the sculptures were taken back to the studio and fired.
To present the sculptures as a snapshot in time they were hung within a Perspex fronted plinth and displayed in Hoyland library. They were also photographed and buried online as a digitally recorded time capsule on the Engage/Create webpage.
“I had a great time working with everyone that came to the workshops. This project wouldn’t have been possible without your participation and input. You gave me the opportunity to pass on sculpting techniques and I have learned so much about Hoyland from your fantastic stories and memories. Thank you!”

About Thomas Palmer
Thomas’s art practice is based around the ideas of society, reality, marketing, and being the change that you want to see in the world. He works primarily as a sculptor and enhance my work with digital images, video and installations.
Thomas said: “My practice, like Perseus’s use of a mirrored shield, is an attempt to reflect mediated information and the unreality of filtered objects back onto the viewer in a hope that they will be disgusted. What I mean by this, is not that I see myself as some sort of hero to society, but if our constructed reality increasingly looks bleak, maybe a better option would be to try and change things rather than retreating into a constructed world. I am absolutely over the moon to be accepted for the ENGAGE / CREATE commission and mentoring programme. I can't wait to connect with the local community, share what I know through workshops and create an engaging piece of artwork with and for the people of Hoyland.”
Thomas was mentored by sculptor Dan Jones.
