Call out for Disabled, Neurodivergent and/or D/deaf Co Producers at Barnsley Museums
Hello, I am Saba, a Curating Visibility fellow based at Barnsley Museums. I am here to interpret the collections from the lens of disability and neurodiversity, using my lived experience and research interests.
Do you love history and want to find out more about what goes into creating exhibitions and museum displays? Do you want to contribute to shaping the way stories are told and objects are shown in our museums? Are you interested in how digital technology can help audiences to interact with museums, their collections and stories? Are you D/deaf, disabled or neurodivergent?
I’d like to invite you to take part in our Disability Collections Co-Production Group at Barnsley Museums. We are looking for D/deaf, disabled or neurodivergent people to come together to explore and discuss our museum collection. This is a part of Curating Visibility, a scheme delivered by Screen South Accentuate Programme.
The theme of the display is Resistance. For example, how people have resisted to ableism (discrimination against disabled people), racism, and society's expectations, and how people have been defiant in who they are and against the debilitating systems in place. The aim is to challenge perceptions by voicing new narratives and engaging new audiences.
I am looking for a group of around 6 people to feed into this by engaging with the chosen objects from the collection, input ideas for the intervention and tell their own stories. There will be a total of 8 workshops held at Barnsley Museums about every 2 weeks starting at the beginning of October until February 2026. Ideally you would be able to attend all of the sessions, and you will receive a £50 voucher for each session and travel expenses will be reimbursed. Other benefits include having the experience of producing a museum display and meeting other likeminded people who are interested in culture and history. It will involve being open to advising on access requirements, producing interpretation and shaping up ideas for the digital intervention and it will be a fantastic experience to contribute to a contemporary museum display.
