Elsecar Heritage Centre celebrates Heritage Open Days
Elsecar Heritage Centre is taking part in Heritage Open Days, England's largest festival of history and culture, with a programme of free talks, performances and an exhibition celebrating South Yorkshire's past.
Created in partnership with RSPB Old Moor, the exhibition explores how the Dearne Valley changed from a centre of industry into an important place for wildlife and conservation. It will be on display at RSPB Old Moor from 12 to 20 September, alongside displays from Hemingfield Colliery, Wentworth Woodhouse, Doncaster Archives and Wombwell History Group.
Visitors can also enjoy a series of free talks and performances at Elsecar Heritage Centre, sharing stories of the people, places and industries that shaped the area.
One of the highlights is Remember the Coal, a performance by Alan Wood and John Snook celebrating South Yorkshire's mining communities through song, storytelling and personal memories. A special open-air performance will also take place at nearby Hemingfield Colliery.
Councillor Sam Burdett, Cabinet Spokesperson for Communities at Barnsley Council, said: "Heritage Open Days are a fantastic opportunity to discover the stories that have shaped our communities. Thanks to the hard work of staff, volunteers and partner organisations, this year's programme brings local history to life and gives people of all ages the chance to learn more about South Yorkshire's rich heritage."
Heritage Open Days programme
The programme includes a range of free talks and performances exploring local history, industry, and community stories at Elsecar, including:
- The transformation of the Dearne Valley from industry to wildlife conservation
- Everyday life in Elsecar and the surrounding area
- The story of a local First World War nurse
- The heritage of Wentworth Woodhouse
- Elsecar's industrial history and links to Sheffield steelmaking
- Remember the Coal, a performance celebrating South Yorkshire's mining communities
All talks and performances are free to attend, but places are limited and advance booking is recommended.
