Share your views on Elsecar Heritage Centre
Elsecar Heritage Centre is a hugely important heritage site in Barnsley. We want your views to help shape its future and to make Elsecar a vibrant place for everyone to enjoy. We want to create a long-term plan for Elsecar which recognises its unique history, alongside its place in the community today.
Elsecar Heritage Centre is made up of old workshops and buildings from the 1800s. These places show the history of ironwork, rail, and coal mining in the area. Today, the site is a thriving visitor attraction, home to many independent businesses. It still houses the Newcomen Beam Engine, one of the oldest steam engines in the world still in its original location. As well as a visitor centre and trails, the historic buildings house a range of independent shops, artists, studios, cafés, a pub and an antiques centre.
We’re consulting and engaging with lots of different groups to create a new vision for Elsecar. Not just the buildings or certain sections of the heritage centre, but about how the whole Heritage Centre sits alongside the park, village, and nearby heritage sites. We want to create a long-term plan for what is possible, inviting people to help shape its future.
