Two volunteer groups at Worsbrough Mill have come together to create a wonderful winter outdoor trail that can be found in the Country Park from mid-December.

The Barnsley Shedders, made up of the Barnsley Men’s Shed and the She Shed, offer an environment for local people to be creative and practice their woodwork skills, while establishing an active and supportive community for those involved.  The group have been working alongside the award winning Worsbrough Young Volunteers (supported by Opening Doors and Qdos Creates) to create a wooden Christmas themed trail in the Country Park.

The trail will be made up of several eye-catching wooden objects beautifully displayed in the park’s natural environment.  Nestled in trees and in wooded areas will be everything from Santa’s sleigh, elves and reindeers to stars, gingerbread men and snowmen.

Adapting to collaborative working during Covid the groups have utilised on-line communication with live streaming of their work, as well as working remotely from different locations.

Local primary schools have also been invited to take part, with children creating individually designed wooden baubles which will be incorporated into the Christmas trail.

Updates will be shared on Worsbrough Mill’s website and social media pages when the trail is installed at the Country Park. People are advised to adhere to the strict social distancing guidelines in place in the Country Park when visiting to make it a safe space for all.

Cllr Tim Cheetham, Cabinet Spokesperson for Place (Regeneration and Culture) said:

Worsbrough Mill Country Park has been an important place for residents during the pandemic.  Its beautiful surroundings have offered a safe space to relax, exercise and unwind.  We are extremely grateful to our hardworking volunteers who have dedicated many, many hours to this project and in doing so created a wonderful winter trail for people to experience.  Although Christmas will be a little different this year, we hope this trail will bring a smile to people’s faces and give them an opportunity to have some festive fun in the outdoors.
